Care guide

Most décor is ruined by the dishwasher or the wrong spray. Here is what each material actually needs.

Ceramic and stoneware

Hand wash in warm water with a little washing-up liquid, then dry the interior fully before storing. Avoid the dishwasher: heat and detergent dull matte glazes permanently. Use a soft cloth rather than an abrasive sponge on fluting and ribbing.

Hand-blown glass

For cloudiness, fill with warm water and a spoon of bicarbonate of soda and leave for an hour, then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid sudden temperature changes — never pour boiling water into cold glass.

Raw and sealed terracotta

Wipe sealed surfaces with a damp cloth. Keep raw clay bands dry, as terracotta absorbs water and can darken permanently. Empty standing water rather than leaving it for weeks.

Marble

Blot spills immediately and never clean with vinegar, lemon or acidic sprays, which etch the surface. Re-seal once a year with a stone sealer if you use the piece for food.

Brass

Warm dripped wax gently with a hairdryer and lift it with kitchen paper. Unlacquered brass develops a patina; polish it back with a brass cloth if you prefer the brighter finish.

Oak

Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry at once. Never soak solid wood or put it in the dishwasher. Re-oil once or twice a year with a clear furniture oil.

Dried and faux stems

Shake to restore plumes after transit, keep out of direct sunlight to slow fading, and dust with a hairdryer on a cool, low setting rather than a cloth.

Candles

Trim wicks to 5mm before every burn and let the first burn run a full hour so the melt pool reaches the edge. Keep away from draughts, which cause tunnelling and dripping. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
